Joplin alternative — FAQ
Is StashSync a good Joplin alternative?
If you want bookmarks and files alongside your notes, with sync that just works, yes. StashSync is offline-first like Joplin but adds a bookmark manager, file storage, and public sharing. If open-source and self-hosting are must-haves, Joplin is the better fit.
Does StashSync have end-to-end encryption like Joplin?
No. StashSync stores your data locally on your device and syncs it to Cloudflare's edge network; we don't sell or share it, but it isn't end-to-end encrypted. Joplin offers explicit E2EE, which is the stronger choice if that's a hard requirement.
Is StashSync open source like Joplin?
No — StashSync isn't open-source. But your notes export as Markdown and bookmarks as HTML, so there's no lock-in. Joplin is fully open-source and self-hostable.
Do I have to set up my own sync like Joplin?
No. Sync is included and works out of the box on Free and Pro. Joplin syncs for free through a cloud you provide (Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud) or via paid Joplin Cloud.
Can I import my Joplin notes?
Yes. Joplin exports Markdown, and StashSync imports Markdown files (.md, .markdown, .txt), so your notes carry over.
